"My First" Israel Independence Day!

When I think of "Independence Day", my first thoughts are of "Red, White and Boom," the annual July 4th firework display in my hometown back in Ohio. Like so many American families, we would head downtown after dark and spread out a blanket on the grass to watch the impressive pyrotechnic display and wake up early the next morning to get a good spot along the parade route to wave at our friends marching with the floats.

As this is my first 'Yom Haatzmaut' (Israel Independence Day) after making aliyah with my family, I have been reflecting upon the similarities and differences between the Independence Day I grew up with and the one I will be celebrating this year.
